Hey everybody. I was at the lake the other day and I caught some clams and brought them back with me. I want to know if they are actually good to have in a tank. I dont have the exact species, but I caught them in lake and i wanna put them in my tank. For now i have them in a breeder trap about 7 or 8 of them. Most of them are rather small but there is one large one. I wanna know if they will live. I dont want them to die burrowed into the gravel and i have to tear up my tank to find them.

Specs about my tank:

Temp: 76 degrees
Ph: 7-8
Ammonia: low
Nitrates: neutral
Planted: moderately
Stock: moderately
Size: 55 gallons
flitration: Live plants and a top fin 60 filter

Good idea or not?

My lfs has some now and then. If you have enough they will keep the water spotless as they siphon through the water. I caught a couple yesterday but threw them back in I shouldve kept them. I have only heard they keep the water clean I'm not certain so I might be wrong.

Can anyone confirm this?

I have heard a lot of good. I just know that dead clams make ammonia shoot up and finding dead ones for removal can be a PAIN. I'll give them a few days in the trap and then release them into the tank.

Clams do best in a tank with lots of green water, since to survive by filter feeding...

So placing them in a planted tank may not be the best idea, since they may not have enough to eat?

Also when they do die they stink, but most of the time you only realize that when its too late...

All I've heard about them is that when they die they completely foul the water of your tank and can make a whole house stink... Rotting shellfish, mmmm.

Nothing rotting yet, I tend to stick algae wafers in the substrate every now and then where they burrowed. Not sure if it's doin anything but my water is always crystal clear.

Not sure if they can eat algae wafers since they are filter feeders...

As a heads up, mine only died about 2 months being in my old tank, and although my water didnt smell (surprisingly) when i pulled them out the living room definitely reeked a lil of dead shellfish...
