i understand the young are parasites but other than reproduction its mostly a commensalist relationship

Confirmed. I keep them in my planted community tank with no ill effects. They're just little living filters. If your water is crystal clear, they won't have anything to eat and will die. You can feed them phytoplankton just like a marine clam, and they will continue to filter your water for you.
