This might be the initial figuring out of the pecking order but I'd not count on it.

We kept common walking catfish as well, had 6 juvies in a 55 gal and two of them were killing the other 4 but were nice with each other, perhaps a couple, even though they were only 6"-8". We picked them up from a dried up seasonal pond.

We had 11 adults 1.5ft-2ft in a 4500 gal just fine, no problem. https://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/threads/walking-catfish-at-fish-story.704473/#post-7941426

I also had Batrachus, even 7 in this same tank about 40 cm in size. I never had a problem with them, they didn't attack each other at all. Unfortunately, they can not be bought anywhere in our natural variant, only gold, albino and mottled. I sold them all and kept only one in another tank. Instead, I bought Gariepinus, which are the most similar to the natural variety. Unfortunately, they attack each other.

again..... as you pointed out, a higher number of batrachus, and you never had a problem in the same tank as gariepinus. Increase the numbers from 3.

Rather, I think about leaving only one in the tank. I'll put the second one in the second tank and sell the third one if he survives.
