Not so rare..they are bred as foodfish.
Yo, thats a monster tank :D ;)

Great Pic :)

I meant rare in Ornamental-fish-trade....

The big Clarias is bread in whole Africa and even Turkey...

...but very uncommon in Europe and other western countries although the commercial interest is increasing.

Apparently in Switzerland this fish is already market under the Brand "Melander"...

By the way, mine is doing really great, I feed it with maggots and earthworms and whatever our outdoor facilities offer on bigger aquatic insects...

...but I am still hesitating about adding it to my Clarias batrachus tank...

I´ll show some new pics after it move from the top-view Tub to a side-view tank....

:)

there are about 25 catfish bereedingfarms in the netherlands but all the fish are exported to Germany about 10 years ago loads of pig farmers here transformd from breeding pigs to breeding catfish. Only a handfull survived 90 % went out of buisiness. no demand for catfish in the Netherlands...porb. a case of bad marketing.
When I look at this picture it makes me want to keep some.. here in Amsterdam they have some huge ones at the Zoo.

Here in Germany they just started some pilots to convince pigfarmers as well but it is still in the beginning, I did not know yet, that it already took place in the Netherlands

Keeping one is great, but mine beeing wildcought is relatively difficult to feed, the Clarias batrachus being bread greatly feed on sinking pellets with high amount of protein and fat...

But the gariepinus is very demanding...everytime it finds out that something new tastes better than something else it refuses the older feedstuff...after it got used to worms it does not like maggots anymore for example :screwy:

I think it would be much easier with a cultured one...

:)

Those are some crazy looking Clarias! I like them! They look pretty mean. Too bad I can't have any around here. :irked:

I just gave mine some pieces of Chicken....

...I hope it will not demand exclusively in the future :grinno:

Great fish...every time the food splashes on the water it reacts and when it is already later on the day it comes out and directly searches for it...

...but it is still a long way to handfeeding :)

My big Clarias now gets a little more trusting coming to the surface but still being a little shy. It already took a worm out of my hands....

It gets wild on Dog- and Cat-Tin-Food and still earthwormes...

:)

Here´s another picture of my Clarias:

But actually now having a little insight view to taxonomy...there are so many species belonging to the Clariid Family that you never can be sure what species you really got....

This one is a wild child from Lake Malawi and was named Clarias gariepinus by the importer....

...still greatly feeding on Dogfood mixed with pulverized troutpellets and spirulinapowder....

...so let´s see how it will develop! :)
