Clark the Sajica: Updates

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Lol, no kidding!

Wow it would be a shame not to let him breed! Very impressive nucal hump too. What do you feed him?

My experience with these is they were fast growing, very similar to what you would expect from Convict cichlids.

These guys are really a great fish, one of the most easy going CA cichlid. Probably the most peaceful fish that will reliably grow a noticeable nucal hump too.

I feed him a combination of NLS and Omega One. I’ll occasionally throw in some frozen blood worms once a week.

Just realized I didn’t answer your question on breeding. Honestly, I don’t want to deal with fry. It’s always a pain separating them and growing them out before donation, store credit, etc. Plus, he seems happy as is.

I will say that I disagree on Sajica’s growth rate compared to Convicts. I’ve kept dozens of Convicts over the years and never had one grow as fast as Clark. Typically, male Convicts take twice as long to get to this size, and even that is an optimistic estimate. The largest Convict I ever owned was Clark’s size, but it took him 5+ years to get there. Again, this is just my experience.

I have not seen either grow this fast I was referring to the norm which in my experience is they have a similar impressively fast growth rate. You wouldn't impress anyone here with a 4 inch male convict after a year after all, but all in all that is pretty fast given that they tend to max out around 5 or 6 inches.

To my eye I'm gonna say Clark is 6"L x 1 1/2"W x 3 1/2"H...give or take a fraction. AKA a mini-brick. :cool-1:
Those are probably pretty close measurements. He definitely resembles a swimming meat brick.

Very nice fish regardless, so you got the fish about a year ago.. got it, for a fish to grow to it supposed maximum size in less than a year is unheard of..unless a dwarf species…
That's not even it's maximum size. duanes duanes iirc had a 10" one, I've heard of them getting a foot. All the cryptoheros/amatitlania/bussingius get significantly larger than what is generally understood, it's just that the people with huge ones don't keep it on record.
Nanolutea is expected to get 4 max, but Kevin at TUIC told me of a 6" male he saw.
Kanna, people usually say gets 5 or 6, which I would say is true.
Myrnae and septemfasciata people say only get 4-5, but duanes again has heard records of 7" myrnae, and Rusty Wessel has 3 7-8" male septemfasciata in his colony. I have video of those.
People say chetumalensis only gets like 3-4, but I have seen 6" ones, but then I am also starting to believe the whole "chetumalensis is spilurus" bit, so to that I will add that the max size on spilurus is 8, possibly 10. There was an 8" cutteri at triple crown.
As for nigrofasciata itself, the lacustrine locales + the ones from the upper nicoya drainage seem to have a max size of 8 - 10" idly. The smaller variants from coastal areas or random inland streams throughout the species' range seem to have a max size of around 5", but 6 is not unheard of.
The only one that seems to stay small is altoflava, at around 4", but then again there isn't enough information on altoflava to say otherwise.

I find it hard to believe that Sajica’s can reach a foot in size. I’ve seen a few pics of some 7” specimens, but nothing beyond that. I think you’re confused….
