A class at school decided they wanted a pet fish, and immediately everyone looked at me as I am the so-called "fish guy." I have a 40 gallon aquarium to work with and was wondering what would be a good candidate for a solitary fish in this size? Or any other ideas?

How about a green sunfish?

Are piranhas legal in your state? A Rhom would make a pretty awesome class pet (as long as it is cared for properly, but that goes for any fish).

Keep it simple. Get a pair of convict cichlids so the class can observe nesting and fry growing without breaking the bank. Fry can be given to classmates who want to try their hand at fish keeping or brought home as feeders.
