i use clay pots all the time and no problems just give it a good rince and put it in

They are a bit of a bacterial filter media also!

i have some also and my fish love them, my danios that used to stay at the top loved swimming in and out of them, until i put the firemouth in there at least

There used to be a problem with heavy metals leaching out of imported low-fire glazed pots. But I haven't heard of any problems with unglazed crockery. Come to think of it, I haven't heard of any problems lately with glazed stuff, either, including my own.
