how do you guys prepare new clay pots for aquarium use?

these have never had dirt in them.

i am looking at using them as caves in my wifes tank, just not something i have done before

I just rinsed mine off well and never had problems. I used to use them for cichlid breeding caves

As a precaution, I normally just rinse it through with really hot water, and then just wipe it clean with a paper towel. Then i just add it to my tank. Never had any problems with it. But at first you may notice tiny air bubbles coming out from the clay pots, but it should go away in a couple hours, nothing to worry about! :-)

how about "breaking" out the bottom, making to small hole a bit bigger? drill it with a wood bit?

Im not sure about which bit to drill.... but if you drill... drill VERY slowly.

Terracotta (clay) pots are inert, so shouldn't cause problems in your tank, just rinse first and away you go.

Use a masonry bit if you are going to drill holes, normal bits for wood will just shatter the pot.
