it is a surface for bacteria. i got pots in my aquarium but they're glazed. im not sure how long unglazed one last but mine has no probs. here's a pic. its great refuge and safe haven for my cats and knife fish.
here's the thread about the cat swallowing a piece of the pot, i know you said it shouldn't be a problem but i just thought it'd be kewl for others to see

Here's a cool look for cutting clay pots. First I saw off the bottom so there's good water flow through the pot. Then, I saw the pot at an angle. When the pot is laid down in the tank, it gives the illusion of a deep substrate. In bare-bottom tanks, this type of cut keeps the pot from rolling. I use a wet tile saw to cut the clay pots.

Thats pretty innovative, But for those people without the wet saw you can go to the hardware store and drop 5 dollars for a hack saw and a cable (instead of the usual hack saw blade) that will handle the clay, but its a good idea to put a little water on the pot before you start to keep the dust from getting too bad.

so does anyone know if clay pots deterioate over time or leech crap into the water?

Never had any problem with clay flower pots. Before bio-balls we used clay pot shards as bio-media in wet/dry filters. Deterioration will be unnoticeable but, like every single thing on this planet, erosion from running water will occur.

The only clay products I've had problems with are clay chimney pipes. I put one in a tank with 15 young albino polypterus and they were all dead the following morning. Turned out there were flame retardants incorporated in the clay.
