When you/we do water changes...the goal is that the fresh water is the same temperature as the tank water. So if your tank is maintained at say 80°F...then the fresh water you add needs to be close to 80°F.

Most of us do not have exactly 80°F water coming out of our faucets...so we need to do some combination of hot & cold water to get 80°F.

Agree with the above post..I actually completed my weekly changes about an hour ago and this time of year the tap water is warm enough in this area where I don't even use the hot faucet.

I always try to match temp, my normal cold tap water averages around 50'F, its source is Lake Michigan.
Because I try to do 30% water changes every other day, and in winter the cold tap can get as low as mid 30's, and even in the heat of summer only low 60sF, simply using cold, would stress the fish to death.

Yea i hear boiling water makes fish happy...

Congrats on getting your water changes done.:) I did one tank this morning (75 gal tank)...now I have 5 tanks to go (20 gal, 3 x 55 gal, and a 150 gal tank). I'm still doing 5 gal buckets...got to get myself a Python!;)

Very nice that your "cold" faucet water is very close to tank temp (makes things easier). My cold water faucet temp is probably around 72-75°F...so I still need to use hot water (but certainly a lot less than in the Winter):)

I have my fish on their own meter (an out building), and the old fish water is used to flush the toilet there, and water the garden. Water/sewer bill averages around $70 per month (although the city does tack on a few other things to the bill, like snow removal, solid waste, etc)
I sure hope you have "cheap" water in Milwaukee!:)
