Hi!

I`ve seen alot of people on MFK with completly "clean Tanks". By that I mean No plant, gravel, sand or anything. Not even a single hiding place. Just fish.

Why is that. Don`t the fish get bored or get a little wacko if they dont ave any place to hide them self? Or is there a benefit I don`t know of!

Its easier to clean, and some people like to focus on the fish and not the decor.
Personally I like having decor, but there are pros and cons of both.

Possibly to maximize tank space for larger fish . those big suckers need every inch of room!

I always thought it would be unnerving to the fish to be in a bare tank and that it was usually just protocol for a QT. But like yourself, after viewing many MFK bare tanks it has kinda grown on me and I believe that all my future tanks will be quite empty except for a single rock or such. I kinda figure that most of the "pet fish" types would get used to the minimal decor in the tank.

different fish need different decor. some fish need to have lots of hiding places some dont etc etc. fish that need the very clean water conditions eg discus will normally be in a bare bottom tank as it is easy to clean.

as for the getting bored comment.. at the end of the day we all keep these fish in small glass boxes when in the wild they would enjoy infinite space in the main... no matter what you put in the tank its going to be boring for the fish

more water volume and most peeps keep predator fish theres alot of scales and such after a feeding keeps the cleaning under control and the tank paramitors mangable also big fish = big waste ..

we are setting up a 220 and we were considering having a barebottom tank... but have black background on the back and bottom and maybe the sides... to make it easier to clean... opinions?

thanks..... I also used to ONLY have what was the closest to having a piece of nature... but like above the barebottoms have grown on me.....

My BB tanks have the bottom and back painted black. I dont do the sides because I like to have natural light enter the tank also, to change up the lighting in the tank as the day goes on. it also gives the fish a daylight photoperiod to give them a sense of season. I also keep bigger smooth river rock along with driftwood for decoration. Just because a tank is BB doesnt mean it has to be sterile.

I tried doing a bare bottom when I set up my 125. It looked like a bag of crumpled @$$. The black back ground did give it a nice touch, so I kept that. I really wish they had a show where people came to your house and aquascaped your tank. Something like "Pimp My Tank" or "Extreme Makeover: Monster Fish Keeper Edition" would sooooo rule.

ya i started off with like brown rocks and my fish started eating it and spitting it out they dont do it much so i guess they got used to it
