Clean up crew for 75g

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Agree with Jon a bristle nose is not the same as those common types that crapp out foot long streamers of feces.
And if there's left over food, you are feeding too much, so better than any clean up crew, vacuuming and regular water changes are really the ticket to a good water quality system.
If you want a South Americam tank, the Epalzeorhynchos (red tails are not S American, but Asian, and can be aggressive (then again the Congo tetras are not S American either).
Ah, I'm new to this and can't keep all of the continents straight haha. I just thought congos looked cool and fit the water conditions.

What are some SA dithers?

Totally agree on BN plecos being amazing at cleaning hardscape. The 2 in my 55 have completely cleaned the rear glass that I never manually clean.

You'll need to sink veggies like cucumbers for the BNs to do best. You can try veggie wafers and the likes, but my experience with that is the other HOGS in my tank get the majority of anything edible first! Annoys the heck out of me. LOL

There are plenty of South American tetras that would be appropriate dithers, too many to name. That is if a geographically correct tank is you aim.
What’re some of your favorites? Would it be more beneficial for the dithers to be from the same region or does it not matter?

For what it's worth, I have also found chaetostoma sp. plecos to be very effective algae eaters. They can be found relatively easily and are an attractive alternative to BN plecos that stay a reasonable size as well.

Doesn't matter in this case, because congo tetras like the same type of water that south American ones do.
Some people just like to keep their tanks somewhat geographically accurate. I am one of these people. Nothing wrong with using the congo tetras if you don't care though.
A south American alternative would be Colombian tetras.

Agree with gourami swami, and I do like the Congos, (and they get large enough to not be eaten). One of my wish list tanks would be to keep them in an African riverine biotope tank, with cichlids like Heterchromis multidens, and Teleogramma depressum or brichardi.
I have used Colombian tetras, lemon tetras, and many others, with cichlids.
I also like hatchet fish, because of their tendency to utilize the surface, one of the areas most cichlid don't hang out in.

Above are lemon tetras I used as dithers in a Mesoheros gephyrus tank
