Hello everyone- it's been a long time but I'm back lol.
I want to add a variety of clean up crew to my tank but I'm worried if I added snails they would reproduce like crazy, if I added crabs they would attack the snails or other bottom dwellers and if I added shrimp they would get eaten. Any other ideas or any species of snail or crab that will be safe to add to my tank

Nerite snails will live but not breed in freshwater.

i know that nerite snails need saltwater to reproduce correct? and apple snails is another name for nerite?

Apple snails and nerite snails are completely different. Keep in mind that although nerite snails can't reproduce in FW, they CAN lay eggs that never hatch all over your fish tank. Mine laid eggs on the grooves of a piece of driftwood...may or may not be an aesthetic problem for you.

yeah i looked it up and realized i was way off lol. idk where i read they were the same. im gonna stay away from the nerites because i seen the eggs and they are nasty. does anyone know how to sex apple snails because i could buy a female ready to lay and end up with the same problem lol?

A single apple, even if female shouldn't be a worry. Even if she lays, it will be at the top of the tank in a cluster that you can remove anyways. They have to lay out of the water or the eggs will drown. Usually along the top of the glass from my experience. The egg cluster will come off with quick pry from a flat object (scraper edge, card, knife). Incubation takes a few weeks, so you shouldn't be surprised by babies unless you miss one of the clusters, which are usually pretty big. As for clean up, IMHO, I never found apples to be that effective. :)
