How big are your rays? I've got some redhead geos, spotted and striped pictus cats, 2 bushynose plecos, and striped raphael cats with my hystrix rays.

My female is 18+ inches wide and my male is around 14+ inches wide.

Ya, we had two large 9" long bala sharks for awhile but my female loves them. She has a thing for them and kills them when she can get the chance.
Kinda weird, she wont mess with the loaches (knock on wood) but as soon as she gets the chance to kill a bala, she does. Just eats the head and leaves the rest.

Irwini cats work best. They're the only thing the rays won't kill, and that won't out compete the rays for food.

I too have a synodontis angelicus. Bought it because i love the look of the spots against the dark skin, but i never see it. I know its there as i can see it under some wood. Guess it comes out at night to clean up, not that much gets left behind from feeding. I also have tinfoils, a shoal of six plus 3 of the twin bar tinfoil that T1 refers to, but these are real slow growers and everytime i try one in the main tank i loose it. I had 5 and now down to 3 at around 2" but need to get to about 3" before they can survive with the bigger fish. Its weird as i have smaller tiger dats that survive in the main tank fine at under 2".

I found they grow fast Jim

I grew loads with Ade

I got them at about 2" grew them in my pup tank to 6-7" in about 2-3 months then move to Ade place and they grew to 10" within another 2-3 months

I have found if the shoal is to big it give the rays more to jump at

I had 9 x12" and they got picked off one by one until I was down to 5
For me 6 is the magic number anymore and they get picked of
I do have a massive 14" one that got jumped a few months back and it lost its gill but it seams fine

I have a large school of large balas as well. They are great at cleanup and unlike catfish or other hiders they are always out and visible. A lot of activity added to the tank with them.

I second db megaladoris IrwinI. Or uranascopis are the best! I would say ripsaw cat but they get too big for your tank

I'm a fan of eartheaters for this, reason being like JK said about Balas, adds some activity to the tank and if you have sand sift, I love watching my balzani sift
