Clean up crew? Waste management...

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Try reading the OP before acting so "shocked".

He said was considering additional powerheads, but was looking for alternative solutions to fixing the waste-in-dead-spot problem, including fish to stir up the waste. Feeding the fish less or lowering stock will not stop poo from building up in dead spots on the tank.

You did nothing but respond to me how bout u make a suggestion before ruling out what I said and u act like I'm really shocked so keep yo comments towards me down and help the op

Is the clean up crew gonna get the poo and toss it out of the tank.

Thats your job.

I have 5 syndontis multipuncatus in my 125 with mbuna. They are mostly ignored. They do an "ok" job at moving stuff off the bottom, but in the end you'll either need some ugj's, powerheads or vacuum. Like Source said above me.

I have a siamese algae eater to clean my tank and it works great. He is pretty big and is quite fast and aggressive himself, so he can hold his own. these fish will bottom feed but also will need to be fed, he just eats whatever I give my cichlids though. I think he is almost full grown and is about 6 inches now.

Honestly you can get floating pellets if you don't already have so,e, but from my understanding your trying to get rid of the poop. There's a million synos you can put in there and check up on planet catfish for that, I've got a cuckoo but he's too small to really clear up right now as he's in another grow out tank, they do great in groups but don't get a male/female because if your breeding chichlids then they're going to spawn same time as your chichlids and give them their eggs resulting in a bunch of dead chichlids.

Synos aren't cleaners, I started with 6 & now have 15. They do move stuff around but not much.

Snails are your best bet for poop. If your snail population is getting out of hand it's a sign something is wrong with the tank eg over feeding, etc.

I was worried about small cats being picked on by the cichlids... will have to look those up, as scientific names normally leave me clueless still.

My mbuna decimated every small cat I put in with them. A large syno was the only fish they would allow.

Be aware that your L-66 is primarily a carnivore as well. Could be tricky making sure its getting food in an mbuna setup.

Turkey Bastet or another wave maker/power head would be my choice. Good luck!

Malaysian trumpet snails are great and anyone with sand should have some to keep sand stirred up. Have you tried an oscillating wave timer or something like power heads on timers? It may help create a more random water flow pattern so all areas are kicked up at some time. In the end you may just have an area that collects all the waste, at least you k kw where to siphon. This sounds strange but baby mbuna make great detritivores in crevices. Once my colonies start to breed well I find much less detritus in the rocks.

Right now I'm just doing the best vacuuming I can with my weekly water changes. Trying to come up with a better way, the large pipe on my siphon vacuum doesn't get into all the smaller crevices, and going to a smaller pipe concentrates the vacuum enough that it siphons the sand out also...
