That's cool. When you say "Thinned epoxy," do you mean, water it down or is there one that comes thinned? What would happen if it wasn't thinned?
 
I would imaging that you thin it down with mineral spirits or something similar so it can be painted on easier, otherwise it will be too thick and be visible when viewed.
 
It can be thinned physically with acetone. Or, 'thinned' by way of combining with less hardener. The latter method will allow the epoxy to settle longer which reduces the appearance of brush strokes from the epoxy's application.
