Cleaned My Pothos

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Very interesting! You just plant it in the media? Does that mean you don't need to take it out and clean it monthly or is that still necessary?
I've never seen plants grown in filters, or at least I haven't known that's where they were planted when I've seen photos. Lol

I like your set up, it looks really good. How would a person go about starting a plant in the filter?

For the pothos I just got it for like 3 bucks at the hardware store's garden section and was given a few pieces from the fiance's parents, and the mint was spearmint from a grocery store clipping which I grow for tea/cooking. Normally they are grown in soil with lots of water but the roots can be emersed no problem. Some leaves did die off but over 75% of it was fine. It grew relatively slow at first but once it got used to the water it took off. I just propped them up in there and let them do their thing. Took maybe 6 months for all of that to grow iirc. I know it was maybe like mid fall when I got them.

It was probably a good 3 months of not cleaning it. I cleaned the top this time since last month I did the canister, that way, no cycle break. I should have done so earlier but I've been really busy with other projects so that was the last thing on my mind haha. The roots were so thick the media basket was getting pushed up! Mostly I did it because the flow rate was starting to get fairly low.

I might have to try that with my 10gl sometime. It's been about a year since I've had live plants and I kinda miss it. I also love the look!

I'm loving all the great ideas I've been getting lately. Haha
