I was out hiking and came across a nice piece of drift wood, when i got home i washed it off but how do i kill all the organisms on it? I know with rocks you boil them but what about wood? Also the wood floats in water so do i just hold it down with rocks or is there a way to get it to sink?

Thanks!!

never had drift wood or any kind but i still research

you still boil it or it will leak out and thats not good for your water
boil it and take the water out and boil it again in time it will sink
or if you have a pond just leave it there for a while..
make sure its a good drift wood cause it could be poisonous to your fish

Check the wood like above... And boil it at least once or twice to kill the bacteria. Then i just throw ot it... If u dont soak it or anything then it will leach out tannins, they are not bad for yoir tank as said above. It will turn your color a tea brown the darkness depends this can be helped with water changes and carbon. It will lower your ph but this can be benificial to some fish... Check the ph requirements of your fish... It will more then likely float for a while since it hasent been factory treated or whatever. You can soak it on the bathtub till ot sinks... If you dont wank the tannins soaking it can also leach out the first big surge of the tannins. It wont sop leaching for a long time but once it gets aclimated to the water it will not leach ass much... Pics of ur piece please.

Is this a dead branch from a tree, or one thats been submerged in water?

Also, make sure its not any type of soft wood or it may just rot in your tank over time...

Another thing is make sure it didint come from a plant with sap, or it could leech out and kill your fish...
