1) Scrub every bit of it to remove anything loose or open up any hidden recesses. Do not use bleach or any chemicals, just a stiff brush.

2) Give it a good long boil. Check the water to see if anything else is there besides wood.

3) Rinse it well.

Heres a dumb question. I'm looking for a fairly large piece of driftwood for my tank currently. How exactly do I "boil" this piece?
I'm assuming fill a large tote with hot water from the tap, then dump in as much boiling water as I can?

Should be doing this in the next week or so as I have a river and a lake nearby and should be able to get my hands on some nice pieces.

If its to big to boil than i put it in a rubbermaid contaner and pour boiling water in it then have it soakin changin water evry other day or so and scrub it

There are 25 gallon stock pots for sale (~$70, roughly 20 inches tall with a 20 inch diameter.) There are even 50 gallon sizes. Boiling one half and then the other is a good idea.

Otherwise, you could soak the wood in the tub with the hottest water running, while putting as much water on the stove as you can. When it's got a violent boil, pull the wood out of the tub, put it in the tupper ware and fill the tupper ware with all of the boiling water. Cover it and let it sit.
