i was wondering what all of you do to clean your fake plants if anything. i would prefer something home spun rather then buying something at my LFS.

You can always sterilize with bleach.....I have never cleaned a fake plant though. I just let those things be...I like the algae look...And I think it is nitrifying to a degree....

A mild bleach/water solution works perfectly. Just rinse well.

the dishwasher works GREAT! you just load the plants in the top rack (with no dishes obviously lol) and let it go through its initial cycle.. DO NOT let them dry in there! they will melt. just pull them out and let them air dry... i do it all the time.

I never thought of that. Sure beats messing with stinky bleach.

i like the algea look for SOME of my plants but i have some that get all brown and not very appealing so i like the washer trick and plan on using it someday

Get two buckets one with 2 cups bleach and 4 gallons of water and one with fresh water. Soak the plants overnight then transfer to the fresh water. Soak overnight in the freshwater then change the water and soak again in freshwater with a double dose of Prime. The dishwasher thing is risky. Soap residue on the plants from the dishwasher can kill you fish. Not a good idea.

Don't use the soap. The power of the jets along with the hot water will clean them.

And I've always just rinsed them well under the faucet after a bleach water soak then let them dry for a bit.

i dont use any soap in the dishwasher at all.. the jets blast off the algae itself. i prefer that method than soaking anything that i use in my tanks in bleach. ive used the dishwasher method for around 14 years, and its worked great so far...
