it's the media that you can't clean with tap water. it would be like doing a wc with untreated tap water. is that what you mean? I put my media in a 5 gal. pail of aquarium water and clean the filter itself with tap water.

Is chlorine the problem with using tap water?

To my knowledge yes! Chlorine and chloramines are in your water supply to kill bacteria.

googled " Chlorine is a highly efficient disinfectant, and it is added to public water supplies to kill disease-causing bacteria that the water or its transport pipes might contain. Chlorine introduced into the water supply reacts with other naturally-occurring elements to form toxins called trihalomethanes (THMs), which eventually make their way into our bodies. THMs have been linked to a wide range of human health maladies ranging from asthma and eczema to bladder cancer and heart disease"

I was pretty certain I havent been doing anything wrong using my water. It isnt chlorinated being from my well. I guess authors assume everybody uses municipal water.

As far as my knowledge goes well water is fine, you don't have to treat it for chlorine. Though, idk what types of other contaminates might be in it... such as metals, ammonia, and debris.
