um didnt anyone see that he said his sister has a goldfish in a small tank for 8 years and its only 4 inches? dude your sisters fish are stunted. and fish do NOT grow to there envirament... i hate it when ppl say that! not trying to be mean bro but your sister gf may have stopped growing on the outside but the inside i imagine is getting all crushed togther. so her gf is dieing painfully, its better to get a goldfisha 75 gallon tank ( dont now how big that is in scottland ) ok a 4 foot by 18 by 21 high. is the min for a common goldfish. and fish growing to the size of there envirement is a myth its not true! so please please tell your sister to get a bigger tank! her goldfish should be in the double digets by now ( like a foot long or bigger if the goldfish is 8 years old ) and no dont get an oto, otos require tropical temps not coldwater ( tropical temps are in the high 70s low 80s ) coldwater temps are from the low 70s to the mid 60s. and plus the tank is to small to even consider adding another fish to the bioload. fand no dont get a catfish your tank is already overstocked. how big is your pond?? and if your tank is getting algea just use your algea scraper and scrape the algea off.

Ok bit to take in there, Gold fish is fine, my sister is only 12 and had it for years. I am pretty sure the fish is fine the fact it is 8 years old and I think its a bit crazy even suggesting a goldfish get a tank that size to itself. As mentioned whn mine get bigger they are going in pond which is approx 16 ft long by between 2 and 5 foot wide ( not square ) and about 2 - 4 feet deep, varies.

The tank sits about 24-26 degrees in the house with no heater which would be fine for tropical fish. Heating is on most of the time as scotland not the warmest of places!

channel cats will eat your goldfish, 75 gallons for goldfish is not crazy, they are a large and messy fish and an 8 yr old goldfish isnt that impressive, ive heard of some 3-4 times that old when kept in proper conditions

very well said! come on now.... just cause a fish fits into a tank doesnt make it big enough.... when buying a fish u need to take into consideration what their long term needs will be.... would you buy a crib for a baby to sleep in for life? no you wouldnt.

Keeping goldfish is nothing to sniff at. They are monsters and usually are abused. Just think about it. These fish should hit six inches in their first year of growth in optimal conditions. We provide proper conditions for almost every other fish in the hobby, but treat goldfish like disposable clones. It's disgusting. And 75g is barely enough for one common goldfish. They prefer company and room to bolt around. You add that to the equation and we're talking 180g. There is just no excuse for cramming these monsters into tiny little aquariums. Again, it's disgusting. [/rant]

If you increase your frequency of water changes, you might be able to get your nitrates back into the testable zone. I'd put money on your nitrate test failing because of the high levels. Get the nitrates down (along with the other organic buildup) and you'll see the algae die back. And it's great that they are going into a pond. Good looking out. It's probably a microscopic pond, but at least they'll have green water to help them out.
