cleaning mechanical filtration

I always blast the sponge media from my canisters with chlorinated tap water from the sink sprayer. I know it's wiping out any BB that's on the sponge, but like said, that's OK. All my bio media gets swished and rinsed in dechlorinated water.

I've been blasting ALL my mechanical media (Sponges, bonded pads, etc) with the outside water-hose nozzle for over 25 years, to no detriment to my tanks. I will say however, that is because I have plenty of separate dedicated ceramic bio media I only rinse in old tank water, and multiple filters on each tank(3-4 filters per tank).

The BEST way to not have to worry about this is to have multiple filters on each tank (my number 1 recommendation) so that if you DO accidentally kill to much BB, you still have plenty in your other filters. NEVER clean all your filter and filter materials at once.

If you can only have 1 filter, then yea you have to be more careful, and it's best to rinse/squeeze it ALL (Sponge etc) in used tank water....
