i agree it gives them something to do, it's got to be boring swimming around in a glass box all day. so yeah i fill them in

I fill them. But I also have clay pots and put gravel in them to see if they'll lay eggs (most of my fish have turned out to be female and have laid eggs). They usually clear the pots after i've filled them in though.
