Cleaning river stones?????

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i have always cleaned then boiled my rocks before i put them in my tank. then let them cool thoroughly.

Be extremely careful doing this. Rocks can and will explode. If the rock was thoroughly dry beforehand then it probably wont, but a damp rock heated to boiling can explode sending high velocity shrapnel through your kitchen. I was once sitting around a campfire built on top of some damp stones when I was in Boy Scouts. Well those stones exploded sending burning logs and embers along with sharp jagged pieces of rock flying through the air. We were lucky no one died.

i put them in the oven personally. 350* for an hour does it, make sure you let them completely cool before you open the door! yes, i have had rocks explode ("pop" would be a more accurate description) in the oven, it wasn't very violent but i guess it could have been.

i had a nasty hair algae outbreak because of some contaminated bleached rocks... i'm assuming it was the rocks, because they were the only thing i added to the tank other than food.
