cleaning tank with Bleach

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
If it was pure chlorine bleach, rinse it a couple times, then fill it up. If you are still scared, add some de chlorinator to it. I just got done rinsing about 400 lbs of field/flag stone. I soaked the rocks in bleach, rinsed it a little, and added right to the tank with fish in it.

If it was scented, rinse it a whole lot. Never use the scented stuff.

I have also used bleach to clean out tanks purchased second hand or after being disused for a while and getting them ready to be put back in use. Just rinse REAL well and cycle as per usual before adding your fish etc. Adding a little extra dechlorinator just in case also is not a bad idea.

I have never had a problem yet with using bleach to clean an empty tank

When ever I get new(used) tanks I always test for leaks with a 5% bleach mixed with the water and set for a week. A good rinsing and a double dose of prime is all that is needed.

I have had to bleach tanks before. Simply rinse a few times, drain and then set outside in the sun and wind for a day or so. Rinse again, and if you are still worried add extra de-clorinator. Bleach I think is Calcium hypochloride, and the chlorine should evaporate away from any residue that is left, maybe leaving a bit of calcium chloride.

By the way, you can use one part bleach to 20 parts water to dip most aquatic plants in for 3-4 minutes to kill algae. Works great when starting a new planted tank to prevent the dreaded beard algae. After soaking, the plants are rinsed several times, soaked in fresh water for a bit then placed in the tank. A few plants like Saggitaria can be damaged but usually come back. Things like Anubias and Echinodoris are not bothered at all. Even most bunch plants can take 2-3 minutes with only minor damage. No algae survives this!

Along the same lines....I have a bunch of tank decorations/rocks/etc that I have been storing in a Rubbermaid container for the past 3 years. I am getting a new tank and would like to use some of these things.....problem is, they have a moderate odor and I don't think it is a good idea to put them in a new tank without a good cleaning. What can I use to clean this stuff???

I use bleach to make sure that the tank is really clean!
I have never had any problems, just make sure you rinse the tank well.

My opinion for what it is worth.
