If the tank is a new set up then it's not cycled yet and that's the cause of your problems. Get to doing water changes and get that test kit ASAP. It's takes about a month (sometimes longer) for a tank to cycle. When did you set the tank up? How new are the filters?

yes, and thank you. he is still on his side of the tank the side he was just hovering at the top of the tank on yesterday. now he is sitting on the substrate. looking at the back of the tank he just started that at like 1am. i will get the kit today
