Okay this tank is almost four months old. I've added no new fish, changed no decorations, changed no lighting, no substrate... everything is the same. It has had crystal clear water since it started up, and had crystal clear water four days ago. Now look.

Water parameters check out. The fish don't look especially wonderful but I wouldn't expect them to in water like that. Water changes have been happening, between 25 and 35% every two weeks. I did a 25% water change when it started turning two days ago, my boyfriend did another 25% WC yesterday, and I did a 50% today. It's just getting worse. I took out the log and all the plants. Any ideas??

Do you use carbon in your filters?? If you do change it. Have you checked for rotting food?

Yes I just use normal cartridges. Two of the four I use on the filters (Penguin 350s) were replaced about three weeks ago. No rotting food whatsoever - bichirs eat everything I put in there and there wasn't many places for it to hide. Like I said, the fish don't look well so I removed the carbon cartridges, treated with Melafix, added about 5 tbs of salt and some 20 ml of stress coat. Also turned the heater on - getting the tank to 80 and letting it level off.

Still looks horrible. What about a 75% WC?? Too much??

No personally I would have went 80-90 myself.. though if it is a bloom you are going to get mixed answers so choose one of the 2 you will most likely get and go with it all the way.. Are you missing anything?

Oh ya and what ever you do ... DO NOT use clarifier.. in this case it will not work :)

Though if it is only getting worse then you might need to try a different approach.. Also the plant might should have stay'd

You don't think a 90% WC will shock the **** out of them? I'm game but... scared lol

My other problem is that if I do these WCs all the time, I'm dumping all the meds I use down the drain and going thru it very quickly. But at the same time, the water is obviously affecting them. Their appetite is now dropping off. Arrgghh. It's depressing to look at the tank.

Not right now you should wait.. you've already changed a grip ... Give it a day or two at least.. I am looking up threads that I know there are other solutions than what i have had work,... and they are conflicting so you are going to have to pick one and go with it... Trust me very soon you are going to have allot of responses from all the people in the threads i am diggin up :( and they are all going to go mosst likel;y two ways..

here are the most common
1-No water change-turn off the lights stop feeding
2-plenty of water changes leave the lights the way they are and don't worry about your feeding schedule..

The first worked for me as well as some Diatom type of filter media :)

Here ios one thread gimme amintue and i'll have a couple more..
