My other problem is that if I do these WCs all the time, I'm dumping all the meds I use down the drain and going thru it very quickly. But at the same time, the water is obviously affecting them. Their appetite is now dropping off. Arrgghh. It's depressing to look at the tank.

top medicating.. the fish arent having the problem the WATER is... Tend to the water first if the fish look ill only after the water went to crap then there probably isn't any disease YET :)

Going to read those now - for the mean time I'll just leave the lights off til Tuesday night and not feed - if it doesn't clear up by then I'll do a big WC...

Thanks for the help! I'm takin a look at that filter now.

I would put the plants back, but leave them floating. They will help suck up nutrients that the algae now is getting. Step two to look at is how long since you rinsed the filters? If there is a large accumulation of detritus in the filter it will lead to elevated phosphate levels, which algae will thrive off of. Lay off the meds all together as tongue said. Although turning off the lights and stopping feeding will eliminate the problem temporarily, it is only temp. The problem with this method is that you don't fix the problem, you are only removing the algae for a time, but it will be back. Fixing the problem at the source is what is needed.

Instead of large water changes ,try smaller water changes 20% more every other day for a week ,no lights for 3 days and light feeding, should clear up in a week!!!!!!!!!!good luck

opinions will very but i would do 50% water changes every other day till it clears , something went really wrong and you want to clear it up fast . how are your ammonia levels i am sure this is not it but this can cause water to go cloudy .

I bet that if you are on city or county water the day you did the last water change before the algae explosion your water would show a change of quality. Iron, phosphate, or nitrates would be the most likely culprits, any recent work been done nearby lately?

Even if you used an algaecide, you would still need to do water changes. If you don't do water changes, the bloom is just going to come back.
