Clearer Looking Water?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I`ve been using a magnum HOT 250 for awhile now.
I run the micron rated cartridge and sponge sleeve and must say, I`m impressed.
Water is really clear.
Coupled with a penguin 350, this little wonder is doing an exceptional job on my 55g.
Takes about a week for the cartridge to need cleaning.
Once you have the particulate gone, the UV can work on the microscopic organisms.
Proper flow to wattage can really take your water to a clarity you have to see to believe.
Never have understood how you can have a Bio only canister or HOB.
You can have a filter that only has bio media in it, but that is still acting as a mechanical filter. Debris will still enter the filter with some getting trapped in the media. Fouled media is not a great home for bacterial colonies.
Its` not like the gunk gets near the filter intake and turns away from the bio media heavy filter.
If you only have a sponge(etc.) to trap some of the gunk, then you have a poorly set up canister/HOB.
It`s not doing either job, bio or mechanical well.
With a filter full of mechanical media some bacteria will find a home in it, along with trapping debris.
At least it is doing a good job of removing particulate.
I have found no need for large amounts of Bio media.
My in tank surfaces provide all the surface area for bacteria to thrive.
If you disagree, fine. I don`t want to argue. Let`s just agree to disagree.
