Clearing a 180gal Full of Mylasian Trumpet Snails...?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I find that mts are not the worst thing in the world to have in a tank, its all just about keeping them under control

mts are livebearing snails, and because of their shells are incredibly hardy
I almost don't think that there is anything you can do that will kill the snails that would not also kill the BB in the gravel
you could beach it (I wouldn't though, I've never bleached anything in my life) or what I would do is boil the gravel, then let it dry out for a nice long time
I wouldn't just let it dry out though, because I've heard that mts can go into a dormant mode and preserve moisture in their shells for up to 6 months at a time
honestly though, I like having snails in my tanks

if they still pop up in your tank for one reason or another, I've heard that people will throw in a sinking vegetable (either blanked or with a weight of some sort attached) that will lure the snails out of the gravel and onto the vegetable, which then means that you can easily remove the vegetable and with it, the snails

Mts can be very difficult to get rid of all it takes are 2 snails that are so small you can barely see them and they will come back. Your probably better of trying to get them under control than cleansing the tank. I had a 75 that was overrun with them and I put in 3 yoyo loaches. Within a month the population was greatly reduced and within 6 months I never saw one again. Its been 3 years and they haven't come back.

My 90 was over run with them. I put in 2 blue botias at 3 inches and the loaches eradicated the snails in 3 months. It has been 4 years and I have yet to see a snail. I also got rid of a piece of bogwood that I think they came in with.

Mts are live bearers and to make it worse, the reproduce asexually, meaning it only takes one snail to reproduce. Pretty tough to kill every single snail the ways mentioned. The best way is to replace the substrate. I know the substrate you have is expensive, but pool filter sand is cheap, looks awesome, and your tropheus will love it.

I had a mts invasion in a 90 gallon a few months ago, clown loaches wouldn't do it, puffers sleep at night and mts are nocturnal, and assassin snails got eaten by the clown loaches! Replaced the substrate, haven't seen another snail.

Use a jar fill with lettuce, leave in overnight. Next morning remove the jar full of snails and repeat.
