I just recently got a new 6' x 2' x 2' tank which after cycling my 15 inch red sn was tranferred over to. This was yesterday....

I come home today to find that my 4 foot holding tank (which was previously housing my sn) burst open near where my heater was located  The front of the tank spilt open with a crack from the botttom to the top!!! This tank was still runnning, and I just hope that the filter hasn't fried. That tank was gonna be my native tank!

More importantly however, I just keep thinking to myself that if I didn't transfer her over that day she probably wouldn't be here now. My red is now swimming around like she owns the place in her new tank. PRobably feels pretty lucky too given that she probably saw it happen (as the old tank was just in front of her)

Now that's a close call......

Anyone know why this may have happened?! Its never happened to me before.

I have never had a tank just break on it's own though I cracked a bottom plate by dropping a rock and had a fish smash an end panel once.

Spooky was telling me that at the LFS here they were telling her that a couple of the glass tanks are having problems with randomly breaking like that. You should ask your LFS if they have heard the same.

that was too close. at least you did move her and she is still alive

It cracked near where the heater was located. I suspect it was caused by the heater in some way as the mounts were melted (however, that may have been after the water came out).

Anyone ever hear of a faulty heater causing such a thing? I am absolutely bamboozled!

I've got to admit that the tank was pretty old (ie >20 years) but to crack like that all of sudden really doesn't make sense. I'd like to get to the bottom of this so it doesn't happen again.

sh breath air... it would of been fine untill you relized it :)

also...

i bought a few baby m.tigs at 1-2" each to grow out and sell..

i was keeping 1 for my slef..

i just bagged them all up to take to lps(sold them there)

1 day later my heater breaks and frys the last one :(

what kind of tank was it? I've heard that all-glass aquariums were having problems with their tanks cracking randomly.

didn't read Acid's post before posting this, but yeah. Thats what I heard.
