I think I asked this awhile back but was not able to get an answer. I am setting up a 535g tank (8x4) and an ultima ii 1000 with reeflow super dart gold will be the filter setup. I have very limited space in my house but would love a second tanks, so I am thinking of having my steel stand built high (42in tall) and then placing my existing 180g tank underneath the 535g. However, this would require me moving the ultima filter and pump into the basement. My house is a split level, so the extra head height is probably about 5-6ft, if that.

My understanding is that with closed loop systems head height is actually irrelevant. Will I have concerns if I do this?

Total tank height will be 6ft and the extra head height brings it to 10-12ft. Looks like the pump does ~1700gph @10' and ~900gph @12ft so I am thinking I am fine.

JK47 JK47 hate to pester you again but you can probably talk best to this.

You are correct, on a closed loop head pressure isn't something that you'll need to worry about, pressure is the same going into the loop as back out, pump just speeds things along. That said not sure how the Ultima would impact it. I suspect you'll be fine though.

No problem, happy to help. Closed loop head height is not irrelevant but significantly less of an issue. The head height at that point is in most cases the difference between the intake and return height + restriction + pipe diameter, which is much more difficult to calculate. It’s not an issue, your pump is pressure rated and will be fine.

The only issue I see (for future readers) is enough of a flow rate to properly backwash. With a 1000 model you should be fine. If it were the 2000 or larger t would be an issue.

Thanks. I need to take measurements and see where I can place things. The good thing is that this basement area is where I run my drip from and where I will be backwashing to a laundry sink.

Unrelated to your topic but hows your structural support in that area of the house? Have you reinforced the floor at all? Thats a lot of weight for an upper floor.

Also, wouldnt you still have room inside that stand for an ultima 1000 and plumbing? Even with the 180 under the main tank you should have 2' along the back of the stand and a foot on each ens of it.

The house is a split level so the room the tank will be in is sitting on a cement slab.

I could cram the ultima and pump behind the 180g but can you imagine trying to do any maintenance? The tank will be in a corner wall so doing that would be asking for problems.
