Cloudy/Dusty water bad for fish?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
This is bad advice, if you keep big messy fish then 25% is far from adequate and 50% is too alot of the time.
As long as you stick to it the fin level WC schedule is best. ( I say stick to it because not doing a WC for a month then doing 80% could shock your fish due to the massive change in water quality)
It will keep your water as close to your taps nitrate level as possible, as long as you dose for chlorine correctly it can only benefit your fish unless we are talking about very delicate fish like discus and apistogramma (in which case you should be very advanced in the hobby and know what your doing anyway).
Read up on nitrate creep, it will shock you how much nitrate can rise above your tap water at 25% wc over 10 water changes just due to the fact your only diluting the current nitrates and not removing enough.
You need to know what the people are keeping and the tank size before you make such a brash statement.
I think I should mention that I don’t just use tap water for water changes. I just use water that comes straight from my pool’s filter and UV steriliser as well as some tap water (it comes through the pool’s pipes and mixes together with the clean fish water from the filter). I do this because the tap water here, in Kuwait, regularly hits temperatures up to 40c and because it’s an easy way to have instantly cycled water.

doing 100% wc is a good way to start a mini cycle Jack waitley does 100% water changes on his discus tanks everyday but he has has aged water an an expensive system to do this if you have to do large water changes all the time you are probally keeping too many large fish in too small of a tank

I'm not starting in on you, just stating fact. Read up on nitrate creep and you will understand this mentality. Please don't take it as me having a go, remember any thread on has potential to been seen by thousands of new fish keepers and blanket statements like 25% is more than adequate can cause new fish keepers to do less WC on their tanks.

“don’t quite buy it”? Have you ever kept this fish before?
Hello; Started keeping fish back in 1959 and have been at it almost continuously since. Did WC your way for some years and found a better way eventually.
Sounds like you are going to be an "I am right fighter" on this issue. So be it, run your tanks any way you wish.

Some people like to keep nitrates ~5ppm after a water change. There are many folks with only 1 oscar in a 75-90 gallon tank that do this weekly, with no mini-cycle.

I’m sorry, but I wasn’t lying about them crashing into the walls of the aquarium. I’m just here to learn from more knowledgeable, experienced aquarists like you and improve my fish keeping skills.
