So my boyfriend pointed out that one of my two Florida gars eyes are a little cloudy. It's not too noticeable but it is a little cloudier than my other gar's eyes. I'm not sure if we are just paranoid or if this is a real problem? If so, what can be done to prevent it from getting any worse? Thanks guys!

looks a little cloudier then usual maybe give it some melafix to jsut make sure

Kinda hard to tell from the pic. Cameras can make eyes look cloudy.

Cloudy eyes can be due to poor water parameters or injury. If both eyes look cloudy, it is probably do to poor water parameters.

What are your parameters?

Yes this picture does make it look a cloudier than it is, but it is still a little cloudier than my other gar. The water is perfect, crystal clear, more than enough filtration and there has been no noticeable injuries to the gar or anyone in the tank.

Water params are as follows:
Ph: 7.4
Ammonia: 0
Nitrite: 0
Nitrate: 20-30
Temp: 78 degrees

We don't have a sick bay available for such a big fish (14") Would it be safe to treat the whole tank with melafix? That would be a pretty large dose!

do NOT give the gar melafix for cloudy eye...it's best not to use melafix or pimafix with gars in general.

cloudy eye can develop in gars for several reasons, but if your water parameters are good, then don't worry about it unless the cloudy eye becomes much worse. i've had gars fluctuate with this condition quite a bit over the years, and other than the cloudiness in the eyes, they don't seem any worse for wear. this is different than in many other fishes where the cloudy eye usually indicates an underlying and often more serious issue.

just keep up with the water changes and monitor your parameters and your fish will be fine. at this time i would not be concerned with the condition unless it continues to get worse. keep us posted--

Thank you. I was hoping you would chime in. I will watch closely and not use any antibiotics. I will be posting again for more advise if it gets any worse :)
