No, they're not carbon or sponge. I want to say phos-x or something similar. I've used these so far, looking on foster and smith now to find it.....

I haven't used this one yet, but it's the same concept.

There are a few on the market, and they all come in individually packed little packets filled with absorbtion media. Just read the box before you buy it.

Thanks I will look into that today or tomorrow.

And to the rest, thanks for the help, but if ya read the rest of thread (and it's been re-mentioned) I am not taking them back to the lfs. These are my babies, and they have an upgrade waiting at home they will be in the very beginning of May, and more upgrade's planned after that.

I will stop feeding beef hearts to these guys, I actually got it to help out my Sengal Birchir who's in a grow out tank, she was really under weight when I got her from the lfs, but the big boys seemed to really enjoy it.
They also get Hikari Cichlid pellets but I know that's not a problem...

I'm hoping the lack of beef heart will help. As I said before... I'm feeding that often, but they are getting very small ammounts in each feeding. (as i'm studying animal nutrition this is healthier for the animal)

Thanks for the help, So I will try:
Less time with the light on
No Beef Heart
Reduce feedings to ~3 times a day
Look into the absorption media

sorry, the only time i see anyone mentioning taking them back was the post before mine. i don't see where you even once said you wouldn't take any back.

anyway, 3 small feeding would be better, but you don't need them to grow fast, so I would just do 2. oscars always seem hungry and definitely don't need to eat as much as they act they they want to

I figured by the rest of my posts it was pretty clear I was keeping the fish... If I have larger tanks planned, and I'm obviously trying to right a problem. If I wanted convicts, I would have gotten them from the start. These two are my pride and joys, more than pets, they aren't going back to an lfs to be sold to someone with a 10 or 15 that doesn't know anything... (I know that would probably happen, cause not once have I been asked about tank size when buying fish that get a foot plus) If I took these two back to an lfs they would almost certainly end up in worse conditions than they are now.

Oh and when i said how much I was feeding them I guess I should have specified... each feeding was either ~3 Hikari pellets per fish or ~1/4th of a frozen cube per fish (per fish being per oscar, anything else that might be in the tank at that time -like the pleco- gets the leftovers if there are any)

You say you clean it every three days, i might know what your problem is. Are you doing 100% gravel vacuums, if so cut it down to doing a little section each week. You're more than likely killing off beneficial bacteria by taking out to much with the vac.

Jimmy

Hey, never thought of that one... I'll that as well.
Just a thought... I do have an undergravel filter and a power head, those wouldn't keep the beneficial bacteria numbers up enough? (just thinking and figured Id ask)

Im not sure of what you're asking, but ill describe what i mean. I vacuumed to much of my gravel and it became really cloudy because it killed some of the bacteria and clouded up my water. If thats what you did then thats your problem.

Jimmy

Alright, Thanks. I'll keep that in mind

did you find the tank cloudy and then post this thread or has it been cloudy for a while.

you might have fed them something that caused the water to go cloudy. when i feed them raw shrimp, the tank goes real cloudy just like yours. but since youre in a dorm, im assuming its not shrimp you fed them

the beefheart might have caused the water go to cloudy. why do you even feed them that. its nutritious but they dont need it. you already got hikari pellets. save yourself the trouble of feeding bloodworms and beefheart. my oscars only get a diet of hikari pelllets. thats all.

I was feeding them frozen beef heart cubes that had plankton in it as well... I think that may have been a cause, but I have stopped feeding it and with not getting anything but Cichlid pellets for the last ~24 hours, a small spot cleaning and 20% water change, the tank is no clearer.
The tank has been cloudy for about the last 2-3 weeks

get a phosphate test kit you will see right away , my tank was exactly like that .i had zero's accross the board except for phosphate. it was at a 10.0 !!! off the chart. the local fs told me it was because i was feeding frozen foods like krill, beefheart ect. i ran poly pads and the tank was crystal clear in 24 hours. hope this helped and good luck with the oscars . mine say hi
