It sure sounds as if your tank has not cycled yet. Best thing to do is a 25% water change and make sure your tank is not overcrowded. Also make sure not to overfeed and remove any uneaten food. Good luck.
yes indeed , If I were you I wouldnt use anything but conditioned tap water and just do 25% water changes as needed ,more or less depending on the test results. Do you have a test kit??????????
With water changes you can keep parameters in check. Just make sure you test the water quality every day maybe even twice a day, until ammonia(nh4) and nitrites(no2) are at zero and nitrates(no3) in the safe zone (under 20 ppm )
your tank is cycled.

Now do regular water changes weekly- 10 - 20% as needed, this is up to you.
For the fun of it you could take your test kit and test your regular tap water , -compare on paper- to the results of your tank, see how much better your tap water is
The idea here is to keep giving fresh water , and taking out old water(about once a week),,,, so your benificial bacteria survive, but your water quality is good

You havent said how new this tank is, ??? did you rinse the carbon filter cartridge, substrate ect.????
Its possible that you changed to much water at one point and now your tank is re- cycling

. Dont change your water and your replacement filter cartridge at the same time. this could wipe out good bacteria, if you also do a large water change while doing a gravel vac. the tests dont lie , tests your water before , after, during, whenever,,,,,keep testing your water until you understand what is happening..
Also get an under gravel filter, this sucks all large suspended particles into one area for easy removal. Good test kits are also very important, do you have them?????
mardel or jungle labs - 5 in 1 test strips are perfect and easy.. also grab the ammonia test..
And remember fish just keep filling your tank up with crap, and its up to you to SAFELY REMOVE SOME..
O.k. now im ready for those water parameters!!!!!! Whats your status??????
