Cloudy Water Help

Yes ,if you don't have ammonia you probably don't need a water change..... I just assumed that you had ammonia from hearing about the bloom....keep testing ,if your parameter are good just do reg . Maintenance and let the filter work ...time is your friend:)

I have been doing a tank black out for the past two days because I fear it can be an algae bloom because the water occasionally has hints of green. Is there any way to check the tank (with light) for no more than a few seconds to check progress without risking making it worse?

Sure. You don't need to worry about algae. Turn the light on . If it is algae just run the light for a few hours each day instead of keeping them on ,if it is green algae it takes several hours of light(per day) to grow

lp85253 Is absolutely right, you are going through a bacterial bloom. First hint towards a bacterial bloom was that you exchanged your media. The main causes of bacterial blooms are removing/ destroying beneficial bacteria. I went through a bacterial bloom once because i vacuumed too much of my tanks substrate and set things out of balance. You will need to keep an eye on your ammonia levels, during Bacterial blooms most of the beneficial bacteria dies off, so therefore ammonia wont be broken down.

1. Dont feed your fish for a few days, make sure you get some type of Bacteria additive like stability or cycle complete it will help catch up. The most usefull thing you can do now is to either go to a local fish place or ask someone you know if you can get some crud (the brown goop when you squeeze sponges/ filter media) It is packed full of beneficial bacteria and will help bb establish in your filters by placing it in your filter. Also

2. If you have a way to add more oxygen to the water either by lowering the water level so the water falls into the aquarium adding oxygen, or by adding a bubbler either will help alot.

Thank you. I'm checking the ammonia in my tank now and there's no ammonia. I also forgot to mention that I have a large sponge filter in the tank also that has not been changed which also doubles as a bubblier and I have a bubble wand in there.

I have a smaller established tank, would it be beneficial to change the filter media in the smaller tank and place the media from the little tank into the filters of the larger tank?

Great that is exactly why i tell people that it helps to have a sponge filter in the aquarium. I'll tell you what to do. Take the sponge off the filter and squeeze it into the back of your hob. that should help alot

I put the filter pad from my smaller established fifteen gallon tank into the back of my Emperor last night and it has not cleared up.

If I take the sponge off and squeeze it wouldn't it make the problem worse because I'm squeezing out the beneficial bacteria?
