How to use clove oil:
1) prepare a solution of clove oil with ethanol (94%): 9 parts ethanol + 1 part clove oli. Keep this solution in a dark bottle, preferably also in the dark. Clove oil must be mixed with alcohol before use because it is insoluble in cold (<15°C) water.
2) use this solution to anaesthize your fish. If you do not have earlier experience with clove oil with the specific species, I would advise to start with the concentration of 40 mg/l. In practice this means that you add 2 ml of the solution into 5 l of water. You should be able to immobilize the fish within about 3 minutes.

I did the clove methanol thing and it worked like a charm!!
i mixed one capful of clove oil with 9 caps of ethanol (bottle top)and mixed it in a glass. Then got 5 liters of water put 1.5 caps of the mixture in the water. She jumped for about 20 seconds (watch this as I caught her in the net with one leap! I did not put a lid on for fear she would damage her face.
Fish was knocked out completely in less that a minute and back swimming in less that 5. Operation is done without a missing scale!! Yes
It is definately a bit scary when you put them back in the tank as they fall to the bottom and look dead. I held her in the current for a while and she is good.
I was not exactly a surgeon on the cut and got close to the plate but not all the way as I did not want to cut the hard plate.
Sorry I tried to get more pics diuring the procedure, but give me a break I was panicking!
