For puffers under 4", fill two, one-quart containers with 3 cups of tank water. Put 3 drops of clove oil in 1 container. Add the fish. Within 1 minute the fish will roll on it’s side and then lay on its back. It will seem dead. This will look scary to you, but your fish will be fine.

Is this correct i was reading about puffers and i came across this... i thought clove oil was used to euthanize fishes...?

It's actuqally a tranq but given in a large enough dose it can be used to euthanize fish-Anne

what are you trying to do to the fish?

The puffers have to have dental work done:D

puffers do NOT have to have dental work done if given a propper diet...

snails are basicly free.. any petco you walk into that has a plant tank will let you pick out all the snails you want... if its that much of an issue you should think about not keeping puffers

ok i was jst wonderin i was lookin into puffers and i saw this and i was like wow, thats a little scary

I had to do this to my brazilian puffer every 4-6 months. I fed him everything I could to keep his teeth down, but just couldnt manage it by diet alone. I oiled him up and clipped his teeth with nail clippers. I have pictures somewhere, but I cant find them.

My proportions were 3 cups tank water for every 1 drop of clove oil.

I remember pufferpunk saying that prolonged usage of this method can cause long term brain damage though. Makes sense.

I've used that measurement on an Oranda Goldfish twice for surgery also.
So I guess it would be ok. But dont take my word for it. I dont want to see
people doing this to their fish without proper knowledge and research.

I found the article in one of my "Tropicle Fish Hobbiest" magazine.
And continued from there.
