clown knife carnage?

I had a 12" CK that didn't eat for a month for some reason. And then it decided to munch on some algae wafers:screwy:

I got a 8-10inch CK about a week ago and still have not seen it eat. I mainly feed all of my other fish an assortment of sinking catfish pellets, vege pellets, and alge pellets. So unless he is looking on the gravel for food, he might soon starve. Any kind of floating food I put in the tank my 2-7 inch pacu gulp. I was worried that my 5inch oscar was picking on the CK because I seen a few scratches on my CK. Then one day I could not find him for the life of me and took all of my ornaments out and found him sharing a small castle with my 3 rope eels. I am now assuming he is getting banged up getting in and out of the castle. Hopefully he doesn't make a snack out of my ropes before i can get them in a different tank. I'm not sure how aggressive these things can get. This is my first time owning one. Very interesting fish though.

mattheuw, IMO your ck is getting banged on by your other fish, and not the castle. do you have another tank you could house it in? also do a water change add aquarium salt and increase temp to help the healing process of the scratches. secondly have you tried frozen foods? frozen raw shrimp, silver sides?

It's probobly pretty stressed man..... I moved it from the tank downstairs to a tank upstairs with the puffer before you came and got it..... So it's been moved a lot. May be sad that it lost it's buddy.... I fed market shrimp and smelt. Seemed to really dig the smelt..... I guess I didn't even ask...LOL You are talking about the one you got from me right????

yeah one and the same, i feed market shrimp, catfish nuggets ($3 per pound), nightcrawlers, and pond pellets. still no luck, but its fins seem to be healing well, even the pectoral that was almost non-existent. acts like it is completely healthy, it might have eaten some of the smaller 1-3" goldfish that were in there that disappeared, i just wasnt able to ever see it. hopefully soon ill get to see it eat something so i can calm down.

Ck like to hide... and when out sometimes swiftly swim into their cave or log or castle.. if this is not big enough yes they will get scratched up sometimes severly..first thing i would do is get a larger cave, castle or log for him..second i would get a long pair of tongs..put the shrimp on the end of it and drop it in his house.. so no one else gets the food... once you know he is eating then maybe you can start training him to come out and you can feed him like you do the others..but for the time being get him use to the tank and his tank mates and serve him his dinner in private... ;)

Thank you Red Devil. The scratches on him are not severe. They seem to look a lot better. I remember when I got him from my LFS, he was in perfect condition with no marks. Then I took him home and the next day he had a couple of scrapes. The scales are there, but the color is slightly scraped off. Doesn't look like a big deal. Bu as for the shrimp, were do people find this, the grocery store? I normally go to the fish store to get food for my fish. Isn't shrimp a little expensive to feed them? What is smelt? What kind of raw meaty foods can I feed him? Please be specific. Thanks

Shrimp isn't really that expensive @ the grocery store. Smelt is a fish that is also sold in the grocery store. At Sobey's it's only a couple of bucks for 2 pounds. I have a golden ck that goes crazy for smelt. He'll even grab it out of the gars mouth and the gar is bigger than him.

frozen raw shrimp at my local grocery store are 4.50 a pound, and i get catfish nuggets for $3 per pound, and a pound goes a long way when you are used to buying fish food from the pet store.
