Hey guys. For a couple days my clown knife has been jumping a lot and sometimes hitting its head on the glass top. At first I thought it was a water quality issue and he was trying to get the hell out of there, but it tested fine. Ammonia 0, Nitrites 0, Nitrates 10-20 ppm. After watching him for a while, I noticed he was attacking the bubbles from the sponge filter at the surface. He's not starving (eats silversides and frozen krill like there's no tomorrow!)

I figured after a couple times whacking his head, he would learn his lesson, but it's non-stop. Is this normal? Should I lower the water level or take out the sponge filter? :nilly:

I'de feed him more personally, long as you can keep up with the water quality. That should tell you if it is out of hunger.. or if he's made a game out of it.

my CK slams the lid when he goes for air.when he was 4" he went for air every 4 to 5 min but now just once a night at 17".he moves up slow the charges up the last 3" then heads back down quickly.

Good point. He does go into stalking mode before he jumps. When he was a little younger, he took out 9 of my tiger barbs and 6 giant danios. I didn't think those fish could fit into his mouth at the time....

mine goes up for air on average every couple hours. even with the open top he never actually leaves the water just hear a snap noise and see him heading back down.

also he doesnt eat feeders, only NLS pellets and massivore so i know he isnt looking for dinner as there are smaller fish he could kill and eat if he wanted to

It's normal for a CK to take a gulp of air every now and then. Just lower the water level if you have any concerns.
