i keep CLs with my african cichlids. my ph is 8.2 and most lfs around here keep their ph a 7.0. i acclimate my CLs with drip method for hours before adding them.

When i set the tank up i added the CLs first with a ph of 7.0. i when slowly raised the pH to 8.2 before getting my african cichlids

Our tanks at the store are pH of 6. Drip acclimation is essential.

Ok heres what I need you to you....

Go get the fish and hold it up to the monitor so we can see what your talking about....

It honestly sounds to me as if your water conditions and those of the LFS are WAY differant. Don't be afraid to ASK what thier peramitors are next time before bringing one home. I know I've even gone so far as to bring a small container with me and take water home for testing.

If the fish is expensive or sensitive, I'll test the bag water myself.

I've tested bag water a few times. From liveaquaria.com it was a reasonable ~350 TDS. But some LFS just top off their tanks with tap water and the hardness builds up so high that my TDS meters give an error b/c they only go up to 1000 or 2000. Or they scroll over because they only have 3 digits. I was wondering why TDS was 400 and after diluting, went "up" to 800. It was because it was 1400 to begin with but the TDS meter only displayed the last 3 digits.

My tanks are at around 50 TDS. Guess what would happen if I just dropped a fish from 1500 to 50 TDS...

That's completely true. We top off with tap water too. That's why drip acclimation is so important.

I run a small bit of salt in our tanks so my normal TDS is 135 or so with water changes scheduled anytime it gets over 350. But I've noticed a HUGE disparity in readings from diferant LFS...I usually take my pocket TDS with me.
