Clown loach grow outs

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Loaches are gonna be in same tank with bichir? This is not a very good idea because if bichir decides to eat them, you may loose bichir and loach..CL has pretty big spikes under its eyes and can tear up bichir from inside while swallowing it..

Had a 8inch one eyed endlie that ate 2.5-3inch clowns like nothing. I would come home and catch it in the act and slimming all over the place.

Its fine as long as it goes in/down head first

Well.. I lost two last night. I was a bit worried when my bichirs really didn't seem that interested in their red worms last night. I moved the remaining 4 into the 20g with the other two grow outs. I'll probably grow them out for a couple of months in there. I may switch to a 40 breeder for my growout tank so I can grow them to the 4-5" mark before trying again.

Wow! I've never experienced or heard of such a growth rate for CLs (2" to 6" in six months; 2"to 8" in a year). What's your feed schedule(type of food, frequency), and what temp do you maintain for your CLs?

To the OP, I feel you'll be ok to grow out those 6 CL in the 20 until they get to about 3.5". Just provide plenty of structures for them to play, hide and just break direct line of sight to ease aggression

+1 clowns are extremely slow growers... 6"-8" growth in a year is almost impossible. im guessing he was power feeding of some sort.
but even with that, those are large numbers for a clown to grow in a year. will be more like 3"-4" growth over a year and then even
slower after that
ive seen clowns that take 4-5 years to hit the 10" mark

apologized for not being clear initially... most CL growth rate are very slow, as flukekiller precisely put... 1"-2" max per year if one are lucky enough to have perfect condition. Most of the large CL in the region of 10"+ are wild caught from Indonesia (heard that it is illegal by the way). For home grown CL like what we have, the common method we used is to kept it in the large pond to encourage speedy growth. (people using CL as a mate to Stingray and other fresh water fish). The left over food from Stingrays and other predator are a great. Many have said that fish will grow according to their habitat (which i am a believer).

normal diet consist of frozen shirmps, high protine sinking pellets (Hikari) and all other food that other fishes in the pond require. In the normal circumstance, 6" can be achieve in less than 2 years. Where as, with regulated (heavy) feeding and right conditions... i have done it in a little over a year, my two cents would be.... constant water change, steady temp (28-30 deg c), healthy diet, and most importantly... strong water current (personal believe).

good luck

Well that sucks that you lost a few CL's, but at least you got the others out. Regardless of the growth rate you get, I don't think these are good tankmates. It seems to me bichirs are one of the few fish that would be able to damage even large CL's because they use the same multiple fin helicopter-ish swimming style as loaches & have serious teeth. A loach's swimming style is one of their greatest weapons & makes them a great tankmate for aggressive cichlids, stingrays, peacock bass and other fish that would otherwise live alone. The confusion caused by the shoal is additional protection. Other toothy fish will generally be left in the dust if they come after a CL, because they can't turn, accelerate & flip like a loach--But bichirs can.

Bichirs are slow swimmers and CL can make a lot of damage with its "tooth" if its grumpy one..my BGK was constantly damaged because fighting for caves and you know how fast and agile bgk is :)
