Rubberband a piece of defrosted tilapia to a rock. Sink it to the bottom. I usually leave that in the tank for 2 hours at a time for them to pick on. In addition to some frozen bloodworms.

sounds like a messy way to feed them esp if the loaches are not large

Its the complete opposite.

Look at it this way:

Would you rather have a ton of food placed in the tank, that the loaches only eat 50% of and the rest rots in the bottom.

or

Would your rather have a chunk that the loaches can feed off of for an hour or so and all the uneaten portion is removed?

That's a no-brainer.

You ever see how tough tilapia is? Its easy to pick apart in small pieces but doesn't come apart that easily at all.

I think the tilapia is an excellent idea, I'm going to do just that. Mine will pick apart a slice of zuchinni in less than 30 minutes so I'm anxious to see what they'll do with a slice of tilapia

I've seen too many times when fed to smaller fish, the tilapia still makes a mess, especially compared to something like pellets, which get eaten fast

Ok, i am a little confused here. Maybe you are using a different type of fish? Tilapia is tough as nails.

With loaches, they just pick tiny pieces of that go right down the hatch.

Pellets are WAY more messy than a piece of tilapia you remove after an hour or so.

Unless you loach is big enough to eat the ENTIRE PELLET in one shot, then tilapia is a lot less messy.

maybe what you buy as tilapia isn't really tilapia. When fish pick at it, tiny particles will still come loose. I have a small (3" or so) CL that will eat floating pellets whole, so surely the bigger ones can do the same, can't imagine how pellets in any way is messy

You guys are killing me lol! I'm going to stop today and get some of that tilapia in the WalMart freezer section and try it. It's labeled just plain "tilapia". It's sort of sad because it's an entire frozen fish :-( I've just got to find out for myself now.
