Clown loaches for 40 gallon?

I disagree that too small of an environment has a direct effect on stunted growth. What stunts fish is lack of food. Fish outgrow tanks if fed properly.

Horsecrap. Environment size most certainly has an effect on the sizes a fish can grow.

That's if you have a 17" fish in an 18" tank. If you have a 3-5" loach in a 12" tank, it's not stunted. Is it ideal? No. Is it ok, yes, but not for life.

If it's been ten years and the fish is still 5", then it's stunted. A clown loach will not reach it's maximum size in a 12" tank, never.

Id say its good to put 5 or 6 smaller clown loaches in 40 gal breeder... Sufficient filtration and water movement... Like most say, eventually u need bigger tank but not for a while.. If u save a dollar a day, by the time they need bigger tank, u will save up enough to buy huge tank and buy more loaches.

Good luck

So why do so many monster freshwater fish (some state records as well) come from small to moderate ponds and lakes? By your statement these monster fish should be coming from the great lakes or somewhere similar. Again fish get stunted by lack of food. If a fish is not comfortable in too small of a tank, it's appetite might be sacrificed. It's not the tank that stunts him, it's the lack of FOOD!

A pond or a lake is still a pond or a lake. Are you really comparing a lake to an aquarium? A good example of stunting due to environment sizes can be seen in koi and peacock bass. When kep in small garden ponds or aquariums, they never reach a fraction of their potential sizes. Koi can easily reach 3ft in a few years given a good sized pond. But when kept in small ponds 1-2,000g they're basically runts. Why? Same with peacock bass kept in 200-400g tanks vs those kept in 5-10,000g tanks.

And this because of lack of food? Please.

Hey thanks for all of your responses guys from your responses sounds like im right on the edge tanks dimentions are 4 feet by 13 inches by 16 inches would love to have the loaches though

Do what makes you happy. I would definitely say you will need a bigger tank when the loaches reaches the 6" mark.
