Clown loaches Q's

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have 9 clowns with 2 Blood Parrots, an iridescent shark, a couple jewels, a red zebra, two green severums, a Dragon Goby, a few Mbunas, 2 yellow labs... and everyone in this tank is actually friendly. I have a lot of hard coral with tons of nooks for them to sleep in. I feed a combo of all types of food, but haven't had any problems. I do have salt in my tank, plus a jet for the clowns to play in. Since I added it, they have already grown about 1 cm each and look sooo much happier. I'm no expert, just sharing my experience.

do you keep your africans in fresh or brackish water?
Africans are not brackish water fish. The Lake Malawi is not brackish. The salt applicable here is "mineral" salt, not "marine" salt.

if you keep them in brackish, its prob. a no go.
Because African cichlids from Lake Malawi, Tanganyika and Victoria are not brackish.

loaches are sensitive to salt. that said, i have seen clown loaches in brackish tanks with african cichlids, and they were fine. actually looked really good.
There is a bottom line between "fine" and "thriving". Which term should we be looking for? And is this for the sake of human entertainment or the fish's welfare? It may be fine but is it okay in the long run? I don't think so. We are sacrificing the fish's welfare too much for our own gain.

Africans are not brackish but almost all the lfs stores tell you that they need salt so a lot of people keep them in salt. because i was misinformed, i kept my africans in brackish for the longest time. glad im not wasting my money on salt anymore thanks to MFK. Also, im not saying he should keep loaches with africans. im just saying it could be done and has been done.

It can be done, but the African Cichlids and other fish in your tank come from very different areas with very different water parameters. I've also had customers say that they have gone a full year without a water change and say that their fish are "fine". I've kept Frontosa in a tank with South American fish. The fish did live, but over time the color faded and the fish was definitely not at it's best. Most would recommend separating the fish requiring higher pH and fish requiring lower pH.
