Thanks now to find Smelt? Our area's Grocery's store version of Gourment Seafood and fish department is a freezer full of breaded fish filets...:nilly:

Go to a bait store. Many carry very large smelt for pike if you have them in your area. If not, the smaller female smelt have roe a lot of the time.

Somebait store will have roe for egg sacs. The sacs are used around me in Lake Michigan for Trout and Salmon. Just call around to local bait shops.

Never heard of oysters packed in a can. Any additives added in there? If there is, then try to buy from a market the fresh ones instead. Make sure all the foods you are giving to your fish do not have additives. Loaches, for your information, relish a lot of foods and most of these are crustaceans and mollusks.

I'm not sure where you live but I live on the atlantic coast and we get fresh shucked oysters in a can, no additives, but they have to be refrigerated and used in a timely manner. Most fish love them, especially catfish (read channel cats) I often hang one from a string in the water and even cardinal tetras will go into a feeding frenzy!

I've actually never seen oysters packed in a can. I live in Asia myself so we get these oysters in markets.:)

I'm not sure we are talking about the same thing. I wouldn't eat oysters that were canned like spam or other canned meat, these oysters are fresh, just without the shells. It makes them great for oyster stew or frying, if i want to simply eat oysters I buy them fresh from the docks in the shell, raw or steamed from the shell is best. but to feed fish it's better to have them already shucked but still raw. (when I shuck them from a shell I can't help but eat them as I go, none for the fishes!)

Actually I asked around at the market and I found out these raw cold packed oystes are often frozen and sold inland in grocery stores. The ones I buy are fresh shucked but only because I live were the oysters live:drool:

Should have been more specific... I meant fresh ones in wet markets.:)

Exactly, nothing like getting them off the boat as they come in from the ocean. I live where they are collected so the ones I get are as fresh as they can be, I even collect them myself at times. Once they get shipped inland they are not quite the same. I've tried the "canned" ones, nasty:(
