co2 cylinder?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I'd really like to get a cylinder, regulator with solenoid and needle valve, and a Ph controller, but I'm not sure I have the money right now. Would DIY Co2 be ok for a 40 gallon or 75 gallon or should I buy a setup and just forget the ph controller now? Thanks.

You really dont need a ph controller if you have the co2 shut off 5 minutes before the lights do. I say 5 minutes because the bubbkes still come out for a little while after you shut it off because of the remainder in the tube. I had mine set up that way and never had a ph swing at all. Photosynthesis stops when the lights are out so set it up on a timer. Cheaper that way and also I would suggest a JBJ co2 regulator.

JBJ is the one I have. Bubble counter and solenoid built into the regulator. I have my CO2 on a timer that comes on with 1/3 of my lighting, and the other 2/3 of my lighting comes on 30mins later. to get CO2 levels up before full lighting kicks in.

DIY should be ok for a 40 gal. You'd prob need 3-4 bottles for adequate CO2 levels, depending on your lighting. What kind of lighting do you have btw?

I had a friend that did DIY on a 75 gal, took 6 2L bottles to get decent CO2 levels for his tank. Personally, I don't think it's worth it to set up 6 bottles, and not just go pressurized. Too much time wasted, fluctuating CO2 levels, money spent on sugar, yeast, etc.
