Ok guys I'm starting off in a new direction and interest from preditor fishes to now a planted tank. I like both but the more picture I see of a planted tank the more I want to set one up.

So question will be about the Co2 system, I see that it comes in all different sizes and prices so which one or price range is good enough for my small 30 breeder. I bet having too much is never bad but I'm also on a budget too.

Also a few more questions if you don't mind.

Is subtrate fertilizer really needed, I plan on getting some grass like plants too?

I'm using play sand, will the grass like plant and all other plant do good in play sand?

what kind of lighting is the best for lighting? I see some lighting at Petsmart and they said it was better for plant growth, true or not true?

Well I'm sure I got more but will ask later since I don't want to bombard anyone with too many at once. Any help will be appreciated, oh and I've starting to read a lot about it but not one article states which Co2 is good for your setup.

i would use the eco complete substrait it works real well for lighting you will want full spectrum lights at 6500K im not familier with c02 here is a link for c02 systems and look throught they have lights too a good 65 watt power compct would be good for a 30 breeder pending on the plants you want

good luck hope this helps

Thanks but $341 is out of my ball park.... :(

for pressurized co2 look on ebay or look for local beverage or fire extinguisher shops
both will have co2 bottles for sale

you will also need a co2 regulator dual gauge and a good needle valve

price of items
5lb co2 tank $50-75
regulator $40-50
needle valve $10-20

play sand sucks for plants they will grow in it but not very well
your tank is small enough that you can afford to use florite $15-20

lights 6500k is the most recommended but i would say pick a color light that you like
(not atinic)

For a 30 gallon on a budget, you can easily do a DIY CO2.

Ive never used any ferts on my planted tanks.

For substrate, I've used sand on the bottom, topped by a flourite gravel mix on top. Ive tried using just sand but had no luck with much.

For lighting it depends on what kind of plants you want to use. For high light plants like riccia and red plants youll want to use a higher wattage bulbs like compact flourescents.

Look up Takashi Amano or get his Nature Aquarium books for great ideas for planted tanks.

Hey thanks, that's the ball park I'm looking for.......under $75 bucks. Also I'm too much of a newbie at this so I don't think I want to make my own DIY and want to buy a complete set. I might even try starting it out in a 10 gallon just to learn and when I get better then a bigger tank will be in the works.

Another question is if I buy one that is good for up to....lets say 75 gallons....there will no harm using it on a 10 gallon would it???

Oh BTW give me a good brand name, my uncle can get me wholesale discount so that should help me out a lot.

if i were you i would use a DYI Co2 steup , using sugar and yeast its alot cheaper and you can make it out of household products

any links to this or any sites that has info on DIY's......

and thanks.
